Melanie Zuniga, a dedicated special education teacher at Coronado Dual Language Magnet Elementary School in Albuquerque, NM, has been named the 2024-2025 Magnet Schools of America Region 5 Teacher of the Year. With a passion for inclusive education and dual-language instruction, Zuniga has redefined the role of special education in a magnet setting, ensuring that every student, regardless of ability, thrives academically and socially.
Zuniga’s innovative approach to teaching centers on culturally responsive instruction and community engagement. She has spearheaded service-learning projects, including partnerships with the Barelas Senior Center, where students connect with the Hispanic community, and a cross-school cultural exchange with Laguna Pueblo Elementary, fostering language and heritage appreciation.
Her ability to build strong relationships with students and families has created a classroom environment where students feel valued and empowered. As a mentor for the Bilingual Seal Program, she has guided students in service projects that celebrate bilingualism and cultural identity. Additionally, she plays a key role in Coronado’s professional development, sharing strategies to support multilingual and special education learners.
“My students deserve to see themselves as capable, intelligent, and important members of our school community,” Zuniga said. “I strive to create an inclusive space where every child can succeed.”
