MSA Membership Frequently Asked Questions

Magnet Schools of America Membership Structure – Frequently Asked Questions

Why has Magnet Schools of America revised its membership structure?

Magnet Schools of America (MSA) has revised its membership structure to better reflect the diversity, size, and scope of its members. The shift from being based on the number of magnet schools to total student enrollment allows for a more equitable and inclusive system that supports all school districts—large and small.

What are the key benefits of this change?

  • Greater Equity: Smaller districts now have a more feasible pathway to become district members, leveling the playing field for participation and access to MSA benefits.
  • Scalability: The new model better reflects the scale of student impact, aligning with MSA’s mission to serve students through high-quality magnet and theme-based programs.
  • Improved Representation: All districts, regardless of how many magnet schools they operate, are now represented proportionally based on the number of students they serve.

Where does the student enrollment number come from?

MSA uses the total student enrollment as reported by your school district. This includes any student population that the district actively supports and maintains communication and services with, even if they are not directly enrolled in a physical school building (e.g., virtual learners, shared services, or alternative programs). Districts self-report this number based on their operational scope and student engagement.

How do we calculate student enrollment?

MSA requests that your district includes all PK-12 students, as that data is submitted to National Center Education Services (NCES).

Why was this change important for MSA to make?

This change ensures that MSA’s membership dues are:

  • More reflective of the resources and reach of each district
  • More inclusive of diverse district sizes, encouraging participation from underrepresented areas
  • Aligned with MSA’s commitment to equity, access, and impact across all communities

By aligning membership with student enrollment rather than the number of magnet schools, MSA can support a broader range of districts and amplify its advocacy for magnet and theme-based education nationwide.
