MEET THE REGION VI TEACHER OF THE YEAR

BRIAN HURLEY
Echo Park Elementary School of Leadership, Engineering and Technology
ISD 196: Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan

Magnet Schools of America is proud to recognize Brian Hurley of Echo Park Elementary School of Leadership, Engineering and Technology in ISD 196: Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan as the Region VI Teacher of the Year. A dedicated educator and instructional leader, Hurley has played a transformative role in shaping a magnet program where leadership, engineering, and technology are not just themes—but lived experiences for every student.

At the heart of Hurley’s impact is his belief that all students can learn, grow, and achieve at high levels when given access to engaging, innovative opportunities. This philosophy drives his work to ensure equitable access to high-quality STEM experiences for every learner, regardless of background or ability. Through his leadership, Echo Park has developed a schoolwide approach where engineering design, robotics, and computer science are seamlessly integrated into daily instruction. His work has helped create a culture where students are encouraged to wonder, explore, create, and lead—building both confidence and critical thinking skills.

Hurley’s influence extends far beyond his own classroom. As a magnet specialist, he leads professional development, coaches teachers through co-planning and co-teaching, and builds systems that strengthen instructional practice across all grade levels. His collaborative model has empowered educators to embrace innovative teaching strategies and has become a defining strength of the school. By aligning curriculum, embedding inclusive instructional practices, and supporting teachers in integrating STEM meaningfully, he has contributed to increased student engagement, improved achievement, and the closing of performance gaps.

A hallmark of Hurley’s work is his commitment to real-world learning through community partnerships. He has cultivated relationships with organizations such as The Works Museum, local industry experts, and community partners to bring authentic, hands-on experiences into the classroom. From Family Engineering Nights that engage hundreds of families to field experiences that connect students with engineers and scientists, these partnerships make learning relevant and accessible. His efforts not only deepen student understanding but also strengthen the connection between school, family, and community.

Hurley’s leadership has helped elevate Echo Park to national recognition, including top honors from Magnet Schools of America. His ability to design sustainable, inclusive systems that support both students and educators reflects the very best of magnet education.
