Rachel Carson School, one of Chicago’s 49 Dual Language schools, is a thriving community centered on student motivation and instructional innovation. Spanish and English are at the heart of every classroom, supporting a predominantly Multilingual Learner population.
Last year, Carson implemented Partner Reading Content, Too (PRC2) across grades PK–8. PRC2 is a student-centered practice designed to boost language acquisition and content mastery using informational texts. Working in pairs, students alternate between silent reading and generating questions. One partner then reads aloud, asks their question, and initiates academic discourse focused on key content and text features like captions, bold words, and images. The second partner then repeats the process.
Teachers adapt the eight core PRC2 components to fit every developmental level, customizing features for preschool learners, while 3rd–8th graders implement all eight components. Through PRC2, Carson empowers students to engage in meaningful discourse, build confidence, and deepen comprehension together.
