Washington, DC (April 9, 2026) — The Administration’s fiscal year (FY) 2027 discretionary budget request proposes once again to eliminate funding for the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP), consolidating it into a broader “Make Education Great Again” (MEGA) block grant. Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the national nonprofit representing the nation’s magnet schools, strongly opposes this proposal.

Public education has always been about more than delivering instruction. It is one of our nation's most important democratic institutions. An institution created to prepare young people for civic life, expand opportunity, and strengthen the communities they will one day lead.
Those purposes have endured. The world around them has not.
Earlier today, the Magnet Schools TA Center sent an email to all MSAP grantees to clarify working on projects during the government shutdown. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our public education system in ways that were unimaginable only two months ago. As most of the country shelters in place, approximately 8.5 to 12 million students lack access to the internet at home – also known as the “homework gap” – making it difficult for students to attend virtual learning sessions or complete homework assignments. This gap is especially prevalent for students of color, students living in rural communities and low-income families where access to reliable Wi-Fi or home computers is extremely limited.
