ANNE MASCHLER
Chavez LA ArTES
Los Angeles Unified School District
Magnet Schools of America is proud to recognize Anne Maschler, principal of Chavez LA ArTES Magnet High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, as the Region II Principal of the Year. A founding leader of the Arts, Theatre, and Entertainment School (ArTES) Magnet, Maschler helped launch the school from the ground up and shape it around a bold vision: a learning community where every student is a Student, Citizen, and Artist. Through her leadership, the school has grown into a nationally recognized arts magnet that blends academic rigor with creative expression while serving a diverse Title I community.
Under Maschler’s leadership, ArTES has achieved remarkable academic outcomes while expanding opportunities for all students. Graduation rates have risen to 100 percent, with more than 80 percent of students meeting University of California readiness benchmarks and nearly all completing the rigorous A–G college preparatory sequence. These gains are the result of a schoolwide focus on equity, data-informed decision-making, and targeted supports such as tutoring, Saturday academies, and expanded counseling services that help students succeed academically and personally.
Maschler has also cultivated a vibrant magnet program built around six arts and career technical education pathways—including theatre, stage technology, visual arts, graphic design, and music—where students connect academic learning with artistic practice. Teachers collaborate across disciplines to design projects that integrate arts and academics, from mock trials that combine English, history, and theatre to science and mathematics lessons that incorporate visual design and creative problem-solving. Through these interdisciplinary experiences, students learn to apply critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration in meaningful ways that prepare them for both college and creative careers.
Equally important to Maschler’s work is the strong culture of community and collaboration she has fostered at ArTES. Through partnerships with organizations such as Branded Arts, Los Angeles Mission College, and local cultural institutions, students gain authentic learning experiences that connect them to the professional arts world. Families and community members are active partners in the school’s success, and Maschler’s visible leadership—from school showcases to community arts projects—continues to strengthen the school’s impact. Colleagues and partners describe her as a visionary leader who inspires creativity, collaboration, and equity, making her a powerful advocate for magnet education and the transformative role of the arts in learning.
