Magnet Schools of America is proud to recognize Samuel Wayne West, principal of Elite Scholars Academy in Clayton County Public Schools, as the Region III Principal of the Year. Since taking the helm of this Early College and Cambridge International magnet school serving grades 6–12, West has led a transformation rooted in rigorous academics, equity, and global learning. Under his leadership, Elite Scholars Academy has earned statewide recognition, with its middle school ranked #2 in Georgia and its high school climbing from #16 to #5 in just one year—an achievement reflecting sustained excellence and opportunity for all students.

At the heart of West’s leadership is a commitment to ensuring that advanced academic opportunities are accessible to every scholar. Through Elite Scholars Academy’s Early College and Cambridge International programs, students can earn college credit through Advanced Placement, Cambridge coursework, and dual enrollment with partner institutions. This inclusive approach—combined with targeted supports such as tutoring, mentoring, and Saturday academies—has expanded participation in rigorous courses among historically underrepresented students and helped close achievement gaps while raising overall academic performance.

West has also cultivated a school culture grounded in high expectations, collaboration, and student voice. Teachers work together through professional learning communities to analyze data, design interdisciplinary lessons, and refine instruction to meet the needs of every learner. Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles through programs such as Student Council, Academic Decathlon, and service organizations, helping them develop confidence and responsibility alongside strong academic skills. These opportunities, combined with partnerships with colleges and community organizations, ensure that students graduate not only college-ready but also prepared to thrive in a global society.

Families and community partners consistently praise West’s leadership for its clarity, compassion, and commitment to student success. As noted in a parent recommendation letter, his open-door leadership style and unwavering belief in students create a school climate where every child feels supported and empowered to succeed. Through strong communication, collaborative decision-making, and meaningful partnerships, West has built a magnet program where excellence, equity, and opportunity intersect.
