When Circuits Fail, Fourth Graders Think Like Engineers

Echo Park Elementary’s fourth-grade students step into the role of systems engineers during their science unit, investigating why electrical systems fail and how they can be designed to operate more reliably. Through our magnet theme integration, students then explore the principles of electrical engineering by interacting with a variety of hands-on circuit systems, including Snap Circuits, Makey Makey, and Squishy Circuits. These engaging and innovative experiences allow students to experiment, troubleshoot problems, test solutions, and deepen their understanding of how electrical systems function. By exploring different materials, connections, and design possibilities, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and engineering skills while making meaningful connections between science and real-world applications. Throughout the unit, students are encouraged to think like engineers as they evaluate system failures and consider ways to improve performance and reliability. To conclude the unit, students will write evidence-based arguments explaining how and why their proposed design choices would strengthen the town’s electrical system, demonstrating their understanding of electrical engineering concepts and the engineering design process.
