Today, elected officials are taking full advantage of social media to stay connected with their constituents. In a recent interview, one influential Congressman stated, “I check my Twitter and Facebook account a couple times a day.” Clearly, using social media is a highly effective way to communicate directly with your political leaders and share information about your magnet school.
Posting a social media message directed toward your elected officials is easy!
First, we recommend that you use Facebook’s new town hall feature to look-up your Members of Congress. https://www.facebook.com/townhall
Most government leaders have Twitter accounts that you can find by doing a simple name search.
- Make sure to craft messages that are 140 characters or less and tweet @ your legislators.
- Share photos or videos from your school – You can use bitly.com to shorten any website links that are
too long to tweet. - It is a good idea to highlight students, press releases, or news stories from your school or district.
- You can also tweet a policy action you would like your official to take or support.

- Be sure to “like” or follow your elected officials on Facebook. When your official posts a story or takes a position on an issue that you care about, use the comment section to express your views on the topic.
- You can also use Facebook to communicate with you legislator by sharing stories, news, or photos from your school on your legislator’s Facebook page.
