A nudge from a coworker at the Health Department prompted Willis Reese III to embark on a journey that led him to the classroom. Teaching became more than just a profession—it became his calling.

Most people have probably called their dad a clown once or twice, but for junior Sophia Rosman, it's no joke. Her father, Michael Rosman, has worked as a professional comedy juggler in a circus for over 20 years. Sophia is a professional special events entertainer. She has performed at the White House, on the Ellen Degeneres Show, and hundreds of other venues.
"The idea that you would intentionally build a student body that is reflective of the region, that's a new thing in Richmond," said Genevieve Siegel-Hawley, an education professor at Virginia Commonwealth University who recently co-authored a report on school and housing segregation.
"What makes you a magnet school?" Part of the response Burlingame received was that the school practices "looping," which keeps students with the same teacher for two years. The goal of looping is to help struggling students and allow teachers to really know their students.
