Washington, DC November 23, 2016 – Today, President-Elect Donald Trump announced that he has chosen Betsy DeVos to serve as his Secretary of Education in his new administration. Ms. DeVos is the chairwoman of the American Federation of Children, which is an advocacy group that strongly supports the expansion of charter schools and school vouchers.
As the incoming Secretary of Education, Ms. DeVos will be tasked with implementing the President-Elect’s campaign pledge to expand school choice options to all 11 million students living in poverty. He has proposed to achieve this goal by dedicating $20 billion in existing federal funding to expand charter, magnet, and private school options.
In response to this announcement, Todd Mann, Executive Director of Magnet Schools of America stated, “We intend to have an open dialogue with the Trump Administration. It is our hope that we can collaborate with the incoming Secretary of Education to enact policies that support increased access to high-quality public magnet schools that promote choice, equity, diversity, and academic excellence for all students.”
