Panelist, presenter, advisor and leader, Kim Lane Marion currently serves as the Director for Advanced Academics & Magnet Programs in Durham (North Carolina) Public Schools. Previously, Ms. Marion was the Program Manager of Magnet Schools & Gifted Education in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She began working with magnet schools almost ten years ago when she became an Early College High School Principal in an adjacent school district.
Kim has an extensive background in working with MSA and on behalf of its programs in her district. She has served as an MSA Merit Award reader for the last three years and was a U.S. Department of Education Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant reviewer. She has presented at MSA national conferences on topics like Aligning Magnet Theme with Common Core and District-and School-based STEM Implementation Plan. Apart from MSA her extensive credentials include consulting with Brown University, New England Equity Assistance Center, Equity Conversation: Updates in STEM Education K-12; being a panelist for Congressional Briefing as a K-12 voice for Teacher Quality Partnership Grant, Capitol Hill and, as an advisor to John F. Kennedy High School, with NC New Schools on Redesign of Comprehensive High Schools.
Kim has coordinated various events and committees throughout her career including more than a decade in business and industry training and development, and almost 20 years as an educator including school administration. She is currently enrolled in an Educational Leadership doctoral program pursuing a North Carolina superintendent’s license.
She holds a Masters in School Administration from Appalachian State University; a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Journalism from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She received her Teacher Licensure Education, from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
