MSA Applauds Key Investments in President’s Budget Request, Urges Congress to Bolster Support for Magnet Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C., March 13, 2023 – Today, Magnet Schools of America recognized the important investments included in the President’s fiscal year 2024 budget request but urged the Biden Administration and Congress to do more to support magnet schools and their critical mission to foster school integration through innovative, theme-based programming.

“We applaud President Biden’s key investments included in the fiscal year 2024 budget request – like expanded funding for preschool, a focus on multilingual education, and a recognition of the importance of career and technical education, among others – as they reflect a commitment to ensuring that America’s schools work for all students,” said MSA CEO Ramin Taheri. “But we, as a nation, must do more to combat structural inequities in our public schools, starting with eliminating, reducing, and preventing racial isolation and concentrated poverty in elementary and secondary schools. The inclusion in the President’s budget of $100 million for the Fostering Diverse Schools Program is laudable, but the requested level for the Magnet Schools Assistance Program, the single existing grant designed to foster school diversity, is inadequate to meet the needs of school districts and localities working to desegregate schools. MSA, and our member schools, look forward to working with the administration and lawmakers to increase the financial support available to provide more diverse and equitable educational opportunities for all students,” said Taheri.
