New London, Connecticut is a small, vibrant community located on the Connecticut Shoreline.  The city encompasses approximately 6 square miles and has a population of just over 25,000 residents.
New London Public Schools is an urban district of approximately 3,700 students with plans to expand to roughly 4,600 students by 2025.  The demographics are 50% Hispanic/Latino, 20% Black, 20%White, 10% representing the other reporting categories.
New London Public Schools is in the final phase of its transformation to the first, and only, all-magnet school district in Connecticut.  The district design includes four K-12 Magnet pathways serving all New London students and attracting students from over 40 surrounding communities.  This transformation includes redesigning academic programs around the four themes: STEM, Arts, Leadership, and Language Culture (including dual language and international programming) magnet programs.
Capital improvement projects are underway. New London Public Schools has four elementary buildings including two recently renovated K-5 campuses.  The district will be transitioning to two campuses for grades 6-12 and is embarking on the construction of those middle-high school facilities: a north campus project at $98 million and south campus at $49 million.

Qualifications and Characteristics:
The Board of Education is seeking a leader who can continue the district’s work of transforming to an All-Magnet School district while addressing educational achievement for all students.

The following qualifications are required:

  1. Current Connecticut Superintendent Certification, conferred no later than January 1, 2018 or credentials in the transfer process prior to first interview
  2. Minimum 3 years district level educational leadership experience, in addition to 3 or more years of building level experience

The Following Qualifications are Desired:

  1. Experience as a superintendent or assistant superintendent
  2. Experience in a diverse, urban district with a clear understanding of the issues confronting teachers and principals in contemporary, urban schools
  3. Demonstrated record of advocating for equitable opportunity, resource allocation, academic achievement and emotional growth for every student
  4. Demonstrated record of establishing conditions for all students to achieve at high levels
  5. Demonstrated skill in working effectively with municipal government and agencies; and building bridges to civic and cultural resources
  6. Demonstrated ability to create a climate of trust
  7. Demonstrated ability to create safe schools characterized by positive environment for learning and teaching
  8. Bilingual/Multilingual competencies
  9. Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders, clearly, and respectfully
  10. Demonstrated ability to create a district culture that embraces the community’s cultural wealth; this must manifest in increased staff diversity and engagement of parents from all sub-groups
