The Center for Advanced Technical Studies is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by preparing every graduate to ready for college and/or career and to be a successful contributing citizen in the global economy and workforce. Every program at the Center holds each student accountable to academic and technical standards, often exceeding national expectations. To ensure that the Center is preparing students for a successful post-secondary transition, each program has an Advisory Committee composed of students, parents, business and industry leaders, and post-secondary education leaders. Standard instructional practice at the Center emphasizes active student engagement through hands-on, project based learning. Knowledge and skills are acquired through application of current technological, pedagogical, and content beliefs about learning. At the Center, learning experiences are individualized and instruction is differentiated so that each student can experience success at high levels that meet Center expectations. Capstone and course projects are individualized and driven by student interests to ensure high levels of engagement and success. Curriculum, instruction, and assessment are continuously monitored and adjusted.

Our motto, “Creating the Future by Challenging the Impossible” emphasizes the importance placed on creativity and innovation. Students work in collaborative teams to solve real world, often student initiated, problems. Students develop written and oral communication skills by presenting and defending projects to panels of judges. Students are continually assessed on work ethic and interpersonal skills to assist in the development of life and career characteristics. The requirement of each second year student to complete a capstone project assists students in the development of global perspectives and teaches perseverance. Language Arts, Mathematics, and STEM concepts are integrally woven into the curriculum of each program with emphasis on the application of world class knowledge in specific career-related situations. The Center is clearly focused on student achievement.


Center for Knowledge

Center for Knowledge (CFK) on the E.L. Wright Middle School Campus is a Nationally Certified, Demonstration Magnet School that serves students in grades K-5 in Richland School District Two.

The CFK curriculum is designed around The Core Knowledge Sequence and meant to be accelerated and rigorous. Classrooms are rich in literature with a focus on structuring literacy so that students develop good lifelong habits in reading, writing and working independently. Students are exposed to the Core Knowledge curriculum founded on the underlying premise, knowledge builds on knowledge.  Many of the most important learning goals for education at CFK, greater reading comprehension, critical thinking, problem solving, are all bolstered by the depth and breadth of our knowledge.


Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences

Dutch Fork Elementary Academy of Environmental Sciences is a Pre-K thru 5th Grade whole school magnet with an emphasis on environmental education. Our school embraces inquiry as a stance for both teaching and learning. Simon Sinek tells us “people don’t buy what you do…they buy why you do it.” In sharing our story we never begin with “what” we do or “how” we do it. Rather we share with prospective families, prospective staff, and new found colleagues “why” we do what we do. Out “why” begins with 10 co-constructed school beliefs that guide and permeate our actions. Those beliefs are as follows:

  • We believe all people deserve to feel safe, valued, and loved.
  • We believe all children are naturally curious about the world around us.
  • We believe learning is a social process.
  • We believe inquiry fosters an environment of noticing and questioning.
  • We believe in learning from multiple perspectives.

  • We believe reflection should lead to change and growth.

E.L. Wright Middle School

E.L. Wright Middle International Baccalaureate World School for the Middle Years Programme and Leadership Academy is a Nationally Certified Magnet School that serves students in grades 6-8 in Richland School District Two.

The International Baccalaureate World School for the Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) at E.L. Wright seeks to prepare 21st century learners to be successful in a global society through engaging and challenging academic opportunities. IB MYP model is a whole-school magnet program. The Leadership Academy at Wright (LAW) is an innovative academic program with a strong integration and emphasis on developing and cultivating leaders. It couples the Core Knowledge curriculum with an emphasis on leadership skills. It is a school-within-a-school magnet program.


Longleaf Middle School

Longleaf Middle offers the School for Zoological and Botanical Studies (ZooBot) and Longleaf Engineering Arts Program (LEAP) and serves students in grades 6-8 in Richland School District Two.

The ZooBot school-within-a-school program provides opportunities for students to explore the natural world, develop an appreciation and respect for living things and the environment, and make a difference for future generations. ZooBot students engage in field experiences to research, collaborate, and communicate as scientists becoming stewards of the environment.

Participants choosing to visit the School of Zoological Studies (Zoobot) at Longleaf will join 7th grade students on their field study at River Banks Zoo. ZooBot has formed a partnership with the zoo to create unique hands-on learning experiences for students. During the tour, participants will join the students through a  3-4 cycle rotation of learning about genetics, zoo babies, and compost. The field study will conclude with a panel of ZooBot students and staff discussing implementation of the program.


Richland Northeast High School

Richland Northeast High School (RNE) is the district’s International Baccalaureate World (IB) High School and has won national recognition that includes Magnet Schools of America Merit Awards of Distinction and Excellence. The four magnet programs at the school include International Baccalaureate, Palmetto Center for the Arts, Convergence Media, and Horizon, serving students in grades 9-12 in Richland School District Two.

The International Baccalaureate Programme embraces the commitment to teach all students to think critically, to appreciate diversity, to serve others, be productive, and to be responsible citizens and lifelong learners in a global society. We are proud to be home to all three IB High School Programmes. All freshmen and sophomores at RNE receive challenging academic opportunities as members of our Middle Years Programme.  Juniors and seniors who participate in our Diploma Programme  receive a challenging and rewarding experience involving rigorous study, active involvement in the community, and scholarly development through questioning and research.  Juniors and seniors who complete required course work, the extended essay, and creativity, action, and service hours are eligible to earn college credit and an International Baccalaureate Diploma. The IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP)  is designed to support and complement career-related courses of study. Students will have a choice of two career paths (Culinary Arts or Health Science)  that will lead to industry-recognized certifications. Students begin their career studies with introductory courses in their sophomore year and continue with career path courses into their junior and senior years. Students who successfully complete the course of study will receive the Career-Related Certificate of the International Baccalaureate as well as a statement of results.

Palmetto Center for the Arts (PCA)  includes dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. The innovative and comprehensive curriculum provides students a strong foundation to enter top-level colleges, universities or conservatories. It is the recipient of the John F. Kennedy Center Creative Ticket award for outstanding achievement in arts education.

Convergence Media (Cavplex)  is an academic elective magnet that  provides students the experiences and opportunities to use the most up-to-date tools and techniques in communication and journalism. Cavplex students participate in award-winning student media: The Archive yearbook; The Cavalier newspaper; the literary magazine, Psyche; the broadcast staff, RNE-TV and The Saber, a student online news and social media program.

The Horizon magnet program is a rigorous, four-year course of study for the most academically talented students to ensure their success during and after high school.


Spring Hill High School
Career Pathways Magnet School

Spring Hill High School is an all choice all magnet high school serving students throughout Lexington-Richland School District Five. As a Career Pathways Magnet, we offer five focus programs to include: Engineering, Entertainment, Entrepreneurial, Environmental Studies and Exercise Science academies. Through these programs, students are immersed into high tech, real-world environments which develop core knowledge, ignite imagination, and make learning relevant. Magnet Schools of America has recently recognized SHHS as a Merit Award School of Distinction for the second year in a row. This award is given to schools that demonstrate a high commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs, and parent and community involvement.
